Mechanical Design Engineer

Job Purpose

This role is based in the Engineering team who work on numerous varied projects where nearly always the designs are bespoke one offs.  This can range from simple modifications to existing machines to complete cells for a variety of different customers, sites and production lines.
This role needs to be able to :  
Create designs for a range of different machines with the ability to work from scant information as well as specifications and be able to allow for multiple customer part variants and changes to  customer parts that can occur during design. The designs must incorporate ours, the customers and international standards and use commercial items from ranges often specified by the customer.
Customer part drawings are often complex and the ability to read and intemperate these is important
A broad knowledge of different types of proprietary equipment is required and a good understanding of mechanisms is essential 
They need to be able to work alone or as part of a team and will often be multi-tasking multiple jobs at the same time for different customers and at different stages of completion
Engineering is a multi-disciplined department and the role will need the ability to communicate design information with different disciplines and adapt designs to suit 
New designs will typically be completed in 3D but the modification of existing machines may be carried out in 2D or 3D
Once a concept is established they will be required to present the design and supporting documentation to both internal reviews and customer reviews
The supporting documentation can typically include Risk Assessments, FMEA’s, Calculations, Functions lists, timing diagrams, and mechanical check lists etc.
After review the design will need updating incorporating any comments and then drawings prepared for manufacture
The drawings are created on customer specific borders and need the selection of appropriate materials, finishes, tolerances, and geometrical control as well as the creation of drawings and bills of material. The drawings are checked where required and the ability to check other designers work both at the design level and the detail level is needed
Manufacturing is carried out by sub-contractors and the ability to answer queries from procurement, machinists and shop floor will be required throughout each .
The ability to fault find and cure problems during the build phase and in production is a requirement either on our shop floor or on the customers site this will need to be in a production environment with limited access if on site.
Working safely at all times both within Felbridge site and on customer’s sites is essential
Preparation of documents for a technical construction file, manuals, instructions and ECPL placards plus the updating of transport system and line layouts forms part of the final documentation phase  The role will also be to support Sites, projects, sales and other departments with technical advice.
Workloads within the department vary necessitating the use of both sub-contract labour and outside design houses this role will require the ability to supervise these resources.

Report into:                   Engineering Manager
Direct reports:               Sub contract designers and design houses on a temporary basis

Working Conditions

Based in the Felbridge office, this role will be required to travel to UK based customer sites which may involve overnight stays. Foreign travel is a possibility. 
The standard office hours are 37.5 hours per week. Overtime is applicable to this role. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Conceptual layouts for new machines and modification to existing machines - Detail design of systems.
  • Integration of proprietary equipment into bespoke designs. 
  • Creation of 3D models.
  • Modification of existing equipment using 2D designs typically in .
  • Presentation of designs at internal and customer reviews.
  • Creation of detail drawings and bills of material plus checking of designs and drawings by others -          Producing engineering calculations where required
  • Creation of timing diagrams and functions lists to liaise with controls hardware and engineers
  • Preparation of FMEA’s, risk assessments and technical construction files
  • Fault finding and analysis of machines during build and test both in house and on customer sites
  • Supporting the sales and site teams with ideas advice and concepts
  • Liaising with engineers, customers, suppliers and other departments - Interfacing with hardware and / engineers
  • Creating documentation for manuals and related documentation
  • Design of safe systems and working in a safe manor at all times
  • Available to work a reasonable amount of overtime, including weekends.
  • Available to work unsociable hours at short notice based on customer requirements

Technical/Functional Competencies Behavioural Competencies
Educated to a minimum HNC in mechanical engineering
Experience in special purpose design with knowledge of techniques
Good working knowledge of mechanisms, materials, jig and fixture design
Experience of Autodesk Inventor and
Understanding of the typical type of equipment used in transmission production lines such as :- transport systems, robots, nutrunning systems, cameras, sensors, pressing systems etc
Attention to detail
Good communicator at all levels.

Committed team player, willing to assist and take on varying tasks that may not be within the core responsibility of the role.
